| The
basic premise for the treatment of wastewater in the last few
decades has been the biological decomposition of contaminants
in a controlled environment, such as in secondary wastewater treatment
plants. During this time many enhancements to the treatment of
wastewater have developed that have proven to be tremendously
beneficial to both effluent quality and economics. Some of these
developments have been mechanical in nature including fine bubble
diffusers, high efficiency blowers, and process variations allowing
for nutrient removal, etc.. While in the field of chemicals, developments
include the introduction of flocculants, coagulants, cultured
bacteria, odor prevention and odor suppression chemicals. |
| |
| We
now have a new biological opportunity for the enhancement of wastewater
treatment. In a typical wastewater treatment environment, a variety
of microbial species collectively biodegrade the waste. The optimization
of this environment by the addition of a non-selective Bio-Activator
is a cost-effective method of increasing plant performance and
capacity, provided that sufficient nutrients and aeration are
available. The introduction of minute amounts of a Bio-Activator
can achieve profound effects throughout the entire biological
treatment system by enhancing the microbiological activity to
utilize it's full potential. |
| |
| YES,
Ltd. has developed a Bio-Activator that has a tremendous affinity
for biologically enhancing the aerobic and endogenous respiration
environments. Bio-Kat
is
a naturally derived liquid Bio-Activator that is non-selective
in nature as well as non-toxic. This product activates the enzymes
responsible for degrading wastes, which allows for increased metabolic
activity, growth and reproduction of microbes. By optimizing and
enhancing the microbiological population within a wastewater treatment
plant, effluent quality is improved, scum formation is reduced,
turbidity is improved, the settleability of activated sludge is
improved and waste sludge production minimized. |
| |
| The
use of Bio-Kat
in
a wastewater treatment plant has the potential for: |
|
|
|
|
|
Improving plant effluent quality, including
lower BOD and TSS; |
|
|
Reducing
total waste sludge, a typical reduction can be from 10-30%
or more; |
|
|
Improving
settleability of activated sludge; |
|
|
Reducing
scum formation; |
|
|
Enhancing
biological nutrient removal processes, i.e. nitrification;
biological phosphorus removal; |
|
|
Elimination
of filamentous algae; |
|
|
Reducing
length of time for plant stabilization after upset; |
|
|
Reduction
of odors; |
|
|
Improved
plant turbidity; |
|
|
Increase
in aerobic digester performance, i.e. typical reduction
in total solids of 10-40%. |
|
|
Reduction
in plant operating costs due to improved plant efficiency
and a reduction in sludge production. |
|
| |
| Bio-Kat
is
easily applied to any wastewater stream via the use of specially
designed dosing equipment or a peristaltic pump; dosages range
from as little as .25 ppm to 2.5 ppm. |
| |
| Other
potential uses in the wastewater environment include: Collection
System Odor Control; Collection System Fats, Oil, & Grease
Control; Lake and Pond Algae Control; and Oil Spill Remediation. |

Investigation of Effects of Bio-Kat
on
Aerobic Sludge |
| |
| Discussion:
A Laboratory investigation of the effect of dosing Bio-Kat
to aerobic mixed liquor was conducted by Yes Ltd
laboratories using Arthur Technology Respirometer. |
| |
| This
test was conducted by filling the respirometer cell with 2000
ml of mixed liquor from a wastewater treatment plant in Southern
Florida. Respiration rate was monitored until the solution had
become endogenous, the 1 ppm of Bio-Kat™ was added to the
cell, within 36 minutes the respiration rate was slowly lowering,
this was monitored for 18 hours. An additional 2 ppm of Bio-Kat
was added and an immediate reduction occurred
in the respiration rate. Thus, as anticipated, the conclusion
of the test indicated that the Bio-Activator enhanced the endogenous
respiration rate in the cell. |
| |
| After
removing the mixed liquor from the cell, an additional test to
determine suspended solids and volatile solids was preformed.
It was observed that a 23% reduction in suspended and volatile
solids had occurred using Bio-Kat |
